Founded in 2014 by independent designer Pien Stieglitz, her namesake womenswear brand Stieglitz oozes the free-spirited and quirky vibe of her hometown of Amsterdam. Taking its operations to a whole new level, the founder decided to open up shop in the city’s scenic Canal District, making a bold retail statement along the way with a little help of local architecture and design practice S-P-A-C-E Projects. Occupies the ground floor of a building erected in 1742, the chosen design codes are in stark contrast with its storied past, featuring a fluffy universe in an orange-brown hue that’s strongly reminiscent of the 1970s, but captured by distinctly contemporary shapes and materials. The cuddliness is evoked by the infusion of carpeting – mind you, the carpeting extends onto many a wall and the sales counter – but even more so by the chunky clothing display units. A tunnel, also clad in fluffy carpeting, leads to the back section of the Stieglitz store where an atelier is situated, while the staircase leads to office space upstairs. The new Stieglitz store carries the brand’s full range of seasonal range of apparel for women and kids, but since it’s also a meeting space for kindred spirits, the premises aim to host meeting and events to foster and expand its growing community.
