Following the initial outpost just off Berlin‘s iconic Kurfürstendamm thoroughfare, AERA has opened a second café and bakery in the city’s Mitte district. Founded in 2018 by actress-turned-baker Ava Çelik – a career change instigated by suddenly diagnosed coeliac disease – the company has garnered a growing following with its alluring gluten-free bread and pastry offerings. Situated on the busy intersection of Rosenthalerstrasse and Torstrasse, the venue occupies a 70 sqm. (753 sq.ft) on the ground floor of a listed building erected in 1890. Çelik tapped local architecture practice Gonzalez Haase to create a fitting design, resulting in an understated setting dipped in blue, a hue taken from 17th-century paintings, most notably renowned Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. The unit has been fully stripped, revealing not only its shell, but also a striking volume which has now been fully utilised. An elongated concrete service counter runs diagonally from the entrance to the back of the café, dividing the AERA premises in two. Also boasting a blue shade, the service counter merges with the setting, becoming a spatial element. A bench runs along the side wall and is paired with specially designed oak tables and stools, all the way to the back where, concealed by a blue floor-to-ceiling mirror wall, a bathroom can be found. Behind the counter, sleek steel shelving matches the bakery’s appliances. The newly opened AERA bakery and café offers gluten-free bread varieties, pastries and other products.
