In the ongoing rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne, the two leading cities Down Under, is one on many levels, but when it comes to luxury shopping, the latter wins hands down. Interestingly, the Victorian capital has had a reputation as the country’s leading hub of style and fashion since the late 19th-century, and many an overseas top fashion house steps it up here in the city’s retail arena. Saint Laurent has long had a local presence, and opened its first standalone store in Australia at Chadstone shopping centre in 2017. And now, only three years on, the Paris-based luxury brand raises its profile once again within the city by opening a prestigious flagship store on the corner of Collins and Exhibition Streets. The location, initially known as Nauru House, is a fully redeveloped site encompassing two towers filled with offices and high-end retail tucked away at their base, and now simply known as 80 Collins Street. Here, Saint Laurent secured a spacious three-storey unit with a street level entrance, featuring an interior design supervised by creative director Anthony Vaccarello. The setting on all three levels is understated yet oozing luxury, captured by marble flooring and walls, shelving and displays trimmed with shiny nickel-plated brass elements, and low benches clad in contrasting black marble. The two lower floors offer Saint Laurent‘s full range of women’s and men’s apparel, accessories, bags, shoes, jewellery and eyewear, and for those in need of special pampering, the top floor features a lavish V.I.P. room.
