With the opening of a new flagship store on avenue Montaigne in Paris, arguably the city’s most prestigious shopping address, Maison Margiela‘s retail design further heralds the brand’s new era of retail design. For the brand’s fourth outpost in the French capital, the fashion house extends its collaboration with Amsterdam-based practice Studio Anne Holtrop into the realm of retail, following its involvement in the scenography for its Artisanal Autumn/Winter 2018 show. The store occupies 250 sqm. (2,691 sq.ft.) set across two floors of a residential structure built in the 1930s. Obviously, the chosen aesthetic seamlessly adapts to Maison Margiela‘s core values, fusing adventurous sophistication with an equal dose of quirky twists which are also reflected in its collections.
A backdrop of cream colour plastered walls are a nod to the brand’s signature white hue, and are paired with artisanal furnishings, familiar in shape yet skew in form, flaunting fabric texture and sculpting dents which also induce tactile interaction with shoppers. The technique of décortiqué, another signature element of the Maison Margiela brand, is further captured by shelves, display tables and seats carved in stained travertine. In stark contrast, the fitting rooms, as if the store’s magical inner sanctum, feature ceilings and walls in a dark-green high gloss almost black hue. The new Maison Margiela flagship store carries the brand’s full range of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes and small leather goods, as well as jewellery, eyewear and fragrances.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
