Good food has been plentiful and varied in Bangkok for as long as we can remember, but as of late a new arrival in the local hospitality scene has set a new standard for even the most jaded palates. We’re talking Blue, the plush eatery of lauded French chef Alain Ducasse. The venue, situated on the ground floor ICONSIAM mall’s luxury fashion section, covers an area of 300 sqm. (3,229 sq.ft.) and features an interior design by Paris-based design practice and longtime collaborator Jouin Manku. The settings are inspired by the intimate gardens of Château de Versailles, the splendorous abode of Louis XIV near the French capital, and aims to capture its tranquility and seclusion through contemporary settings. Upon entering the restaurant, guests find themselves in a welcoming wood panelled foyer. Light from above and from the encircling wall of suspended walnut and brass lamps creates the effect of the magical light of fireflies. The lounge area is demarcated by elongated pendant lights, crafted from timber and brass by designer Martin Hoontrakul. The dining space oozes subtle splendour, albeit of a different kind, and it’s arguably best captured by a pleated chandelier which fans out over the heart of the dining area. Walls are dipped in a deep blue shade and are matched with carpeting in a lighter blue and timber. One side of the restaurant encased in floor-to-ceiling glass, offering guests sweeping views of Chao Phraya river and Bangkok‘s ever-changing skyline. Blue seats a maximum of 130 guests and features afternoon tea, lunch and dinner menus by one of the planet’s most celebrated chefs. The cooking here isn’t only refined, but also embraces sustainability while paying homage to the authentic tastes of produce, resulting in ethically sourced local and seasonal products.
