Almost a year after opening up shop in SoHo, women’s fashion brand KHAITE has opened a second retail space in New York City. The fashion brand, creatively helmed by designer Cate Holstein, has secured a corner location on what’s arguably the city’s swankiest address—Madison Avenue. The KHAITE store occupies approx. 186 sqm. (2,000 sq.ft.) on the ground floor of a Neo-Renaissance-style structure originally built as a hotel in the 1920s by architect George F. Pelham. Similarly to the downtown store, the interior design has been created by architect Griffin Frazen. Interestingly, the chosen aesthetic takes cues from Japanese tatami mat principles, and is reinterpreted through large format hot rolled steel plates that are thoughtfully arranged on the floor without fasteners or additional finishing.

This architectural element has resulted in an intriguingly modular grid that guides both spatial organisation and movement. Sleek and understated, furnishings such as displays, which also serve as seating, emerge seamlessly from the steel floor plane, while a robust display wall with recessed niches adds an element of weight to the otherwise ethereal setting. Additionally, the storefront with its seven windows has been redesigned and now features custom-made bronze window frames with oversized glass panels, while a second entrance was added around the corner on 69th Street. The new KHAITE store carries the full range of women’s apparel, accessories, bags, shoes, and small leather goods. © superfuture
