Bold and bedazzling, lensman David LaChapelle‘s work usually is bigger than life, and his latest publication, entitled Act of Nature, obviously is no exception. The book sits at the intersection of the earthly and the transcendental, of a utopian fantasy and a dystopian reality, with humanity and nature living both in harmony and in conflict with one another. The strong visuals are accompanied by essays of author and art writer Katya Tylevich and Matthias Harder, historian and chief curator of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. Drawing from his immediate surroundings and LaChapelle’s previous experience as a photographer to the stars, from religion and spirituality, and from the art historical canon, he crafts images that not only capture the visual senses, but also the mind and the heart. Coinciding with the release, an eponymous solo show opens on Sat – Jun 1 at Reflex gallery in Amsterdam, and mind you, it’s an event the master himself will attend (book signing: 5.30PM). On display is a series of his latest works, in addition to includes highlights from the past ten years and a selection of previously unseen work which will debut in the Dutch capital.
