In a nation as blatantly practical and down to earth as the Netherlands, FREITAG‘s sturdy tarp bags and pouches have always resonated well. But while the goods had been available at several depositories nationwide, the Swiss brand strangely lacked a standalone store here. Well, that was yesterday. It’s on Rotterdam‘s Van Oldenbarneveldstraat, a thoroughfare known for its upscale multi-brand boutiques, where Freitag‘s first Dutch outpost has just opened its doors. Occupying a compact store unit, the retail space is spread across a ground floor and mezzanine level, featuring the the similar utilitarian look as all other FREITAG stores across the planet. A band of white stripes frames the floor-to-ceiling glass façade, adding a dynamic decorative element to the understated setting. The ground floor is marked by the brand’s signature shelving system, displays and cabinets, and a monochrome backdrop of concrete flooring and walls dipped in a grey hue. Upstairs, the setting comprises of metal pegboard panels, paired with similar furnishings and wire mesh. The new Freitag store carries the brand’s full range of tarp bags, pouches and accessories.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
