Since its initial launch in London in 2004, creative director Rei Kawakubo has not only expanded Dover Street Market to leading shopping destinations New York, Tokyo, Beijing and Singapore, but also a retail benchmark that’s hailed, referenced, and copied across the planet. Very much a reflection of fashion’s seasonal transformation, many of Dover Street Market‘s settings change accordingly, allowing its huge following to be instantly mesmerised. Well, it’s that time of the year again, and Dover Street Market Ginza, the outpost in one of Tokyo‘s most exclusive shopping grounds, has revealed its new look for next season’s collections across all floors. Obviously, the Elephant Room or events space on the ground floor is included, where Nike holds court with an installation that involves a swirling photoshopped curtain.
Upstairs shoppers will come across specially designed spaces for blockbuster luxury brands such as Prada, Gucci, and obviously Comme des Garçons, its many curated collections and affiliated brands. But what makes shopping at Dover Street Market so exceptional is Kawakubo’s keen roving eye for exceptional newcomers and small emerging brands which are usually just as groundbreaking as her own creations, and more importantly, they’re pushed into the limelight with a stellar showcase on the premises as well. In the latter category fall Nemeth, Namacheko, kolor and Kiko Kostadinov, all of which have now found a prominent spot in the Japanese capital. Next to new brands, a wide range of new collections and items make their debut at the store.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
