First opened twenty years ago, ZOE Ginza is a multi-storey building in the upscale Ginza shopping district of Tokyo. The nine-storey building is home to a number of high-end stores and hospitality venues, including Max Mara, Graff, City Club of Tokyo and Luxe Tokyo. Although not officially a shopping centre, it’s home to a variety of businesses. The venue’s entrance on bustling Namiki dori, which provides access to establishments on the subterranean level and upper floors of the building, in addition to the ground level public space, have recently seen a dramatic makeover. Tokyo-based architecture practice Negu was commissioned by Nomura Co. Ltd., the building’s design company and contractor, to create updated settings inspired by the Japanese aesthetic concept of depth while also oozing an allure similar to the high-end tenants. The entrance was designed as a gateway to define the boundary between the interior and outside, welcoming visitors in by using intricately calibrated lighting. The stainless steel used for the entrance aims to reflect the Ginza area’s glamorous cityscape and create a universal value as it changes with the changing times of the city. The hallway of ZOE Ginza has a ceiling shape based on the motif of traditional Japanese coffered ceilings and the appearance of the natural stone that emerges with the soft light from the indirect lighting, creates a sense of coziness and intimacy. © superfuture
