If you’re able to build a cult beauty and fragrance brand like Ben Gorham has done, sniffing out a happening neighbourhood – yes, pun intended – obviously is a piece of cake. We’re talking Byredo‘s retail expansion in Los Angeles, opening a second boutique in Silver Lake, an emerging upscale shopping neighbourhood in this sprawling city, and one of the creative director’s preferred areas to hang out. Occupying a lofty ground floor corner unit in an early 1930s structure, the store is part of a wave of cool fashion and lifestyle brands which have opened up shop here in recent years, including Warby Parker, Happy Socks, Maison Kitsuné, and most recently, General Admission. The store’s design codes, laid down in collaboration with Stockholm-based architect Christian Halleröd, are predominantly clean and understated, but also allow contrasting textures and quirky pops of colour. Pristine white walls and large terrazzo floor tiles form the backdrop for a meticulously orchestrated setting with a slight gallery feel.
Large silvery steel-clad panels line the walls on one side of the store and cover a large part of the back wall as well, creating depth while also adding to the setting’s subdued visual drama. Two glass and aluminium cabinets anchored with a more outspoken custom Italian terrazzo base are placed right in front of the panels. Directly opposite, a tall cabinet can be found with similar understated characteristics, in addition to large mirrors placed in zig-zag position. Taking centre stage are two circular mechanical tables in an eye-popping pink hue, offset by bespoke pieces, such as a daybed custom designed by Byredo‘s in-house design team, a Moroccan hand-knotted carpet and a terrazzo stool. Special attention has also been given to the store façade which comes in lava stone. The new Byredo boutique carries the brand’s full range of fragrances and cosmetics, in addition to its expanding range of bags, shoes, eyewear and other coveted goods.
