Based in New York City, high-end fashion brand rag & bone first opened an outpost on the other side of the Big Pond little over a decade ago in London. Expansion in Europe has long been put on the back burner – well, at one point there was a standalone boutique in downtown Oslo, but that proved to be a short-lived venture – but three years ago, a second retail space opened its doors in the city’s popular Soho shopping district. And now, rag & bone has opened up shop in Amsterdam, which can be seen as the official kick-start of new retail expansion on the Old Continent. The rag & bone store in the Dutch capital is situated smack in middle of the scenic Canal District and occupies 500 sqm. (5,382 sq.ft.) spread across three floors of an early 20th-century structure which was originally built as a cinema. The interior design, created by rag & bone’s in-house design team, is clean and understated, and dotted with carefully sourced vintage furnishings.

The ground floor sees a pristine white backdrop with warm timber accents. Furnishings, such as display tables and shelving units, come in different styles and have a slight industrial edge. A seating area, featuring two of Mies van der Rohe‘s iconic Barcelona chairs and a comfy sofa, offers shoppers a place where to sit back in between shopping sprees. A staircase leads to the first floor, the men’s domain, and here, sandblasted timber flooring lends the setting a slight rugged edge. Furnishings are more or less similar, but the seating area, anchored by two KS46 chairs by designer Anton Lorenz for Thonet, a matching steel-and-glass table and leather sofa, in addition to other vintage pieces, give the men’s floor a distinct look and feel. The top floor is home to office space. The new rag & bone store carries a selection of women’s and men’s apparel, denim pieces, accessories, bags, and shoes. Mind you, during the upcoming summer season, rag & bone‘s next European outpost is scheduled to open in Düsseldorf. © superfuture
