Since its foundation in 2005 with a Canadian partner, 7OCEANS has design bases in both Toronto and Taipei, in addition to factories in Taiwan and Indonesia. Initially creating outdoor furniture, the company has since expanded to other areas of domestic life with additional products. As of late, 7OCEANS has upped its retail operations, opening a standalone showroom, in Taipei‘s affluent Zhongshan district. Occupying a 120 sqm. (1,292 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of a mixed-use building, the retail space features an interior design by Helsinki and Shanghai-based interior design and architecture practice Yatofu that takes cues from drawing inspiration from the ambiance of a twilight stroll along the beach in – yes, why not? – the alluring French Riviera. Delving deeper into 7OCEANS‘ brand values, a focus on keywords such as relaxation, warmth and ocean evolved which resulted in creating a setting detached from the building’s distinctly commercial atmosphere.
Additionally, given 7OCEANS‘ line of business and advocating exquisite material production, materials with inviting textures were selected, while a store configuration was created which would incite tactile exploration and leisurely strolls of the premises. Rough sand-coloured clay bricks form the backdrop, creating various display spaces while adding a warm, welcoming touch, and it’s paired with handmade rattan elements which signal 7OCEANS‘ craftsmanship. A blue latticed steel frame sits beneath the exposed ceiling, defining and visually extending the space. Attached to the frame are hemp rope chandeliers adorned with boat knots which emphasise the resort design theme. Above the cashier, a wall lamp featuring the brand logo in the form of a ringed tag casts a gentle glow reminiscent of beachside street lamps. Next to the entrance, a walk-in display window mimics the structure of a beach pavilion.
