First launched in 2019, Frieze Los Angeles has quickly taken root, mesmerising the large local pool of contemporary art aficionados and collectors with offerings from the planet’s leading galleries. For this year’s edition, Italian activewear brand Stone Island pitches in with an immersive archival exhibition in Culver City that’s called Selected Works ‘982 – 024’.  The showcase brings rare and previously unexhibited pieces stateside, such as the first comprehensive overview of the Stone Island Shadow Project. The exhibition also expresses the brand’s belief in Lab-Life – community in tandem with production – with pop-up stores and a café run by various local Los Angeles-based friends of the brand. The exhibition is an immersive experience and opens with a monumental display of 42 archival pieces, representing important milestones in the history of the Stone Island brand. A further display highlights 12 Reflective jackets, including from the ‘992 collection when Stone Island first researched reflectivity.

Then, an installation highlights Stone Island Pure Metal Shell jackets, with 35 examples on display follows. Later in the exhibition, seven rare pieces from the Stone Island Prototype Research Series are displayed. The Stone Island community is at the heart of Selected Works ‘982-‘024, with a programme of screenings and talks taking place during the run of the show. A highlight of this will be the premiere of Infinite Colours, a feature-length documentary by Berlin-based filmmaker Ken-Tonio Yamamoto about the workers and their processes at Stone Island’s headquarters in the Italian town of Ravarino. Also screened will be director Jeremy Elkin’s short film The Compass Inside, which draws links between the global Stone Island community. A program of talks includes appearances by Chris Gibbs, Liam MacRae, Chris Black, and a slew of others (open through Mar 3). © superfuture.com
