India‘s economic growth has seen continuous, solid growth – well, similar to many countries, there was a dip during the pandemic years – which infused the country’s middle class. This specific demographic now already represents 31% of India‘s whopping population of 1.44 billionindeed, that makes 446.4 million people with a considerable disposable income. Needless to say, the growth of the middle class is transforming the country’s retail and hospitality infrastructure, and that’s particularly the case in its biggest cities, including Ahmedabad. The newly opened arsa restaurant is one of many new establishments that cater to next-generation consumers with design-led setting inspired by local cuisine and traditions. Situated on the premises of Shaligram Corporates, the head office of a property development company, the dining establishment features an interior design by local architect Vaissnavi Shukl and her team.

The chosen aesthetic takes ample cues from arsa‘s culinary concept which is rooted in Pahadi culture from the Himalayas, and obviously, its cuisine. Mind you, restaurant’s name is taken from a traditional sweet from the northern state of Uttarakhand. Hand-plastered wall evoke the feel of mud walls from high-altitude vernacular houses. A dry grass installation over the open kitchen is a nod to traditional thatch roofs in the mountainous region. Additional cultural references come in the form of colourful custom-woven Changpa tapestries, created by Indian craft lifestyle brand enii and suspended by traditional Ladakh-style wooden columns, and four imposing gongs. Furnishings comprise a low cushioned benches, paired with low timber tables and chairs. As said, arsa serves dishes from the far North of the country, but it’s also an all-day diner, featuring a menu with snacks, small plates, soups and complete trays suitable for any moment of the day. © superfuture.com
