The association of fashion with culture may seem far-fetched and contrived, but not if it’s Saint Laurent. We’re talking the new bookstore which the storied fashion house has just opened in Sèvres-Babylone, a plush neighbourhood on Rive Gauche in Paris. Dubbed Saint Laurent Babylone, as a nod to rue de Babylone, the street where designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé once lived amidst a spectacular art collection. The bookstore location, once home to a Saint Laurent boutique, sees an interior design by its creative director Anthony Vaccarello which is an extrapolation of sorts of the brand’s recently inaugurated flagship store on avenue des Champs-Élysées. The space has been entirely gutted, juxtaposing the imperfections of its bare walls with polished concrete flooring and a slew of modern furnishings and fixtures, such as a monumental marble-clad display table and matching shelving units, sleek wall-mounted shelves and a Pierre Jeanneret reading table with stools. The new Saint Laurent Babylone store carries a mix of rare books and new publications in collaboration with various artists, and a selection of vinyl, all curated by Vaccarello himself. Additionally, Saint Laurent Babylone is also a gallery, featuring a rotation of exhibitions. The inaugural show presents artworks by Rose Finn-Kelcey (1945-2014), an iconic figure of the British 1970s feminist art community. © superfuture.com
