Grupo Habita, the boutique hotel chain which has firmly shook up Mexico‘s hospitality infrastructure with a string of alluring properties, has once again expanded its portfolio. Following the opening of Escondido Oaxaca in 2019, the hospitality chain has inaugurated a second hotel in the Southern Mexican city. Situated also downtown, only a few blocks away from the first property, Otro Oaxaca is a collaborative effort with local architecture practice RootStudio. Interestingly, the hotel stands on a site previously occupied by 1980s tenement housing from the 1980s, and occupies a structure which not only effortlessly blends in with the urban scale of the site, but also preserves the layout of the historic city centre. As such, the main building takes ample cues from local culture, notably the Mitla cross, but is also distinctly modern, featuring an interplay of light and staircases that subtly add to the guest’s sense of exploration. Upon entering the premises, passing the historic brick façade, guests find themselves in 40-metre corridor built from repurposed wood which both connects and divides the space.

The interior settings, created by Grupo Habita designer Carlos Couturier and RootStudio architect João Boto Caeiro, see custom-made furnishings, crafted from wood, upholstery, suede, resins and metal by local artisans. Otro Oaxaca features 16 guest rooms in four categories. Given its downtown location, Otro Oaxaca is ideally situated in the vicinity of many landmark buildings, and unsurprisingly, a handful can be viewed from its rooftop terrace. The terrace offers guests a tranquil oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and comes with an open-air bar and lounge with comfy sofas, and for those who need to cool off, a swimming pool is also readily available. Mind you, there’s an additional underground pool which of a full-fledged spa which offers massages, aroma therapy and other soothing treatments. In-house dining? Check. The homey restaurant, helmed by chef Saúl Carranza, offers a menu with less emphasis on tradition, but more focus on flavour, freshness and unexpected textures. Its signature dishes are all created with local ingredients, can be enjoyed both on the ground floor patio and at the large communal table on the rooftop.
