Known as a leafy neighbourhood dotted with both Art Deco gems and fashionable eateries, it’s no doubt that the allure Condesa contributes a great deal to Mexico City‘s global appeal. It’s right here where Austin-based boutique hotel chain Bunkhouse has opened its second outpost south of the border. Called Hotel San Fernando, it’s situated across the street from the verdant greens of Parque México and occupies a former apartment building erected in the 1940s, and features just 19 guest rooms and suites. Designed by Bunkhouse‘s in-house design team and Mexican urban redevelopment firm Reurbano, the interior takes ample cues from the building’s architectural legacy, paired with the anti-traditional elegance that functioned as a symbol of post-war opulence and nods to Bunkhouse group’s Texan heritage.
Homey and comfortable, the rooms feature dishware, textiles, furnishings by design studio La Metropolitana, and artwork that feels as though they had been collected from many visits to the city’s many markets. Mind you, a custom linen programme from Kassatex and signature Bunkhouse custom robes pay tribute to the city’s rich textile heritage. The eye for detail obviously extends to the property’s public spaces and facilities. Hotel San Fernando‘s lobby, featuring a backdrop of casement windows, encaustic tile floors and stained glass, is home to a cozy bar and lounge offering coffee and pastries by day, plus small bites, natural wine and speciality cocktails that reflect the season by evening. At the hotel’s sunny rooftop terrace, which is exclusively for hotel guests, breakfast is served each morning.
