Given its artisanal excellence, it’s hardly surprising Hermès continuously aligns itself with leading artists, and it’s reflected in many a boutique across the planet. The Hermès flagship store in Amsterdam, nothing short of an architectural marvel with a stunning glass brick façade, is no exception, offering an alluring backdrop to highlight such a bond. For the upcoming summer season, the Paris-based luxury behemoth has invited Kustaa Saksi, a Finnish visual artist and designer based in Amsterdam, to create a fitting window installations. The intricately designed window installations, aptly entitled Journey of the Sun, touches upon the theme ‘Astonishment’, and is an ode to Summer and the continuous cycle of nature and creation. In the past few years, Saksi has artistically explored man and nature through innovative jacquard fabrics. Mind you, he even developed new mechanical weaving techniques in collaboration with TextielLab, the knowledge centre of Textielmuseum in Tilburg. Saksi’s artistry is evident in the window installations, featuring colourful tapestries and accompanying objects, all intricately crafted from paper which offer viewers an almost immersive visual experience. Playfully embedded in the two installations are a number of Hermès icons—a Kelly clutch in electric blue leather, a Pegasus silk tie, sandals, and last but not least, a bucket hat, the latter two being summer essentials (on through Aug 26).
