Multi-tasker Rom Sangkavatana already shed some light on his creative focus and career in a previous interview, but now the young Thai creative has gone solo as creative director and artist ROM, and demonstrates the move publicly by way of a touring exhibition. And no, it’s not at his home base Bangkok, nor in his other professional stomping ground London, but in today’s leading Asian creative hub—the South Korean capital Seoul. Opening on Sat – Oct 15 (11am-3pm / press only) at Paso Gallery in the city’s leafy Jongno-gu district is REBORN, the very first exhibition of the Thai creative. So, what’s on display? Well, the show’s concept is based on rebirthing the notion of love and beauty, but inspired by a local perspective. This has resulted in a visual narrative, crafted by ROM in collaboration with emerging Bangkok-based photographer Ten Pannatat and jewellery designer Sarran Youkongdee, that’s both realistic and fantastical. Mind you, the show is also accompanied by a soundtrack. But it isn’t all about aesthetics as the series of medium-format film photographs on display also aim to instigate a new and transgressive dialogue with the local creative community, and one that hopefully leads to an unprecedented cultural cross-pollination.
