For those power shopping regularly in Tokyo‘s upscale Aoyama district, the Yohji Yamamoto boutique might be a familiar stopover. Well, the Japanese fashion house has just upped its presence in the area with a second retail space which is aptly named Yohji Yamamoto 2. Occupying the ground floor and basement of a modern low-rise structure, the retail space is actually designed by designer Yohji Yamamoto in collaboration with multi-hyphenate Kunichi Nomura and photographer Takay. Interestingly, the trio set out to design the space with the question how to bring new kind of functionality into the space without compromising the focus of the Yohji Yamamoto brand, and they concluded that the symbolic design theme should be ‘floatability’.

The predominantly whitewashed ground floor sees a nifty grid hanging system, embedded in protruding moulded panels, which not only allows a versatile configuration of apparel display, but also puts a visual spin on the spatial experience. In the store’s basement section, which in stark contrast is almost entirely black, a similar hanging system is installed but with lacquered wooden panels. Walls are adorned with decorative metallic louvers, and on an entire wall Takay’s specially commissioned video is screened, featuring a mix of photos of Yohji Yamamoto designs and Tokyo cityscapes. The new Yohji Yamamoto 2 boutique carries the brand’s new power of the WHITE shirt line, featuring 20 white shirt designs, fourteen for men and six for women, in addition to the LIMI feu line.
