The demise of downtown Detroit is officially over. We’re talking the much-publicised arrival of Gucci‘s new flagship store on Library Street. It’s the very first store of a luxury brand in this part of town, and we’re expecting that more will follow suit in the near future. The Italian luxury brand occupies a 3,500 sq.ft. (325 sqm.) unit on the ground floor of the landmark King & Company Building, a 1911 six-storey structure in Chicago School style by local architecture practice Rogers and MacFarlane. The interior design, created by the brand’s creative director Alessandro Michele and the in-house design team, sees Gucci‘s eclectic design codes mixed and matched with the building’s protected architectural characteristics. The façade’s relief ornamentation extends indoors and is featured elaborately on the display cabinets and fixtures, and also flooring, albeit in a light grey shade, and it’s paired with columns clad in glittering silver tiles. The various store sections are furnished with vintage-inspired cabinets in contrasting dark grey. Tufted bright yellow ottomans provide seating throughout the premises, while potted plants add a homey touch. A suspended grid of tubular lights ties in all sections of the store. The new Gucci flagship store carries the brand’s women’s and men’s apparel, accessories, bags, shoes, jewellery and watches, cosmetics, and even items from the Gucci Décor collection.
