Housed in the plinth of a monumental 19th-century building in the heart of Stockholm, the Acne Studios flagship store has occupied one of the city’s most prestigious retail locations for many years. Mind you, it’s the former main branch of Svenska Kreditbanken, and in 1973 this very location formed the backdrop of a bank robbery and a related six-day siege whose peculiar circumstances eventually spawned a psychological condition known as the Stockholm Syndrome. The brand’s creative director Jonny Johansson tapped Arquitectura-G, an architecture practice based in Barcelona, to revamp the premises, and the result is light years away from the existing Acne Studios stores around the world. Fully stripped to reveal the building’s original marble structure, the new interior design of the store has used it as a starting point, and now sees understatement, a fixed element in the brand’s retail aesthetic, paired with, yes indeed, an infusion of marble. The setting now sees a multiplied series of Doric columns, marble floor tiles and walls painted in a marble motif. Furnishings and fixtures include Acne Studios‘ usual sleek steel clothing racks, lighting fixtures by Benoit Lalloz, and large marble display tables by British designer Max Lamb. The renewed flagship store carries the brand’s full range of men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, bags, shoes and jewellery pieces, in addition to an edgy Stockholm Syndrome capsule collection which Johansson has created to commemorate the historic heist.
