KENZO is on the move again. Since creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista took the creative reigns of the Paris-based brand last year, the fashion world has also changed dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most brands are tweaking their business models and strategies, while others have simply shuttered. As part of the almighty LVMH portfolio, KENZO may be backed by considerable funds, but as any company, it operates with profit in mind and continues to see a future through brick and mortar sales. Under creative supervision of Baptista, an additional retail space has just opened its doors in New York City. Situated in Soho, on the corner of Grand and Mercer Streets, the boutique occupies a lofty 3,000 sq.ft. (279 sqm.) unit on the ground floor of an early 20th-century building with a red brick façade. Large windows provide ample peeks of the store interior, created by Baptista, and allow in floods of natural light. Simple and playful, and blending in some elements from the past, the premises are distinctly modern and see scaffolding-inspired shelving, clothing racks and display installations. Additional furnishings comprise of vintage leather seats and plexiglass displays, and last but not least, an abundance of potted plants. the side wall is entirely covered in mirrors which optically enlarge the space. In order to foster the link with its youthful following, the store also features a dedicated space for rotating artistic installations. The new KENZO store currently stocks the full Kenzo x Vans collection.
