Is Shenzhen becoming cooler than Hong Kong? Straddled alongside the northern border of the former British Crown Colony, this fishing village transformed into the sprawling metropolis it is today, and in just four decades. The lifestyle of its dwellers is more or less comparable to those on the other side of the fence, but one thing’s for sure, it’s diversifying at a faster pace than ever before with an increasing number of happening places popping up across town. Very recently, the doors opened of Conemoting Market, an upscale hybrid retail concept which combines a fashion store for professional buyers with a bar and lounge. The first of its kind in Meilin, a largely residential neighbourhood in South Shenzhen, the store occupies a 580 sqm. (6,243 sq.ft.) in the plinth of a 1990s apartment block.

The interior design, created by local practice Yebin Design, should be seen as an extension of Conemoting Market‘s online operations while it also references the lifestyle of its youthful following. Upon entering the premises, shoppers encounter a bar and lounge which, thanks to floor-to-ceiling orange and yellow-tinted glass panels, gains a psychedelic edge. The space features an elongated bar with leather-clad stools, in addition to sofas and chairs, and a furnished outdoor terrace. One floor below, the boutique is situated, and here, the aesthetic shifts into what could be best described as fantastical sci-fi. Suspended bold shapes are alternated by surrealist objects, captured in white surfaces and shiny metal, and it all sits below an exposed ceiling with utility pipes which adds more visual layering.
