The swanky Midtown area in New York City is the exclusive shopping domain of the planet’s leading luxury brands, and Chanel is no exception. The iconic Paris-based fashion house has had a multi-storey flagship store on 57th Street, its largest nationwide, for many years, but as of late, a sister establishment has opened around the corner on Fifth Avenue. The new Chanel boutique, dedicated entirely to its wide range of jewellery and watches, occupies two floors of the historic Crown Building, and features an ornate interior design by acclaimed New York City-based architect and longtime collaborator Peter Marino. Needless to say, Chanel has put out all the stops to wow even the most discerning of shoppers – trust us, Manhattan has plenty of them – with lavish store settings that reference Coco Chanel‘s private apartment on rue Cambon, and the fashion house’s original jewellery and watch boutique on splendorous place Vendôme, both in the French capital.
The store features a series of intimate salons, of which one is reserved for private appointments, each featuring opulent backdrops, furnishings and objects—walls in gold or adorned with coromandel-style finishes, chandeliers by Goossens, an affiliated goldsmith in Paris, a richly carved gilt Regency-era mirror, and wooden lotus bouquets from Japan’s Edo Period. Elevating the shopping experience even further is an array of artworks, most notably ceramic camels from the Tang dynasty, a wall piece by American sculptor Louise Nevelson, and a gold leaf wall collage of no less than thirteen panels by Iranian-American painter Y.Z. Kami. It’s obvious that the new Chanel store is a prestigious showcase, and as such, shoppers can indulge in its top range jewellery pieces, including its Lion de Solaire collection, and watches.
