Affiliated to the avant-garde fashion boutique Project 3.14 next door, the Carol Christian Poell store in Moscow initially opened its doors in November 2021. As of late, the retail space of the Milan-based cult designer has been expanded with an entire second floor in the same building. The 86 sqm. (926 sq.ft.) space, previously occupied by offices, sees a renewed collaboration between renowned Russian architect Ariana Ahmad and the Carol Christian Poell team in the Lombardian capital, and the chosen aesthetic is pretty much an extrapolation of the floor below. Adapting to the quirky design codes of the brand, whose apparel pieces and footwear are often crafted from experimental fabrics and leathers, in addition to ditto techniques, the understated setting allows the merchandise on display to effortlessly stand out.

The backdrop comprises raw, exposed walls, either treated with a glazing technique or covered in white tiles, paired with a new concrete floor. The ceiling is equally bare, showing utility pipes next to newly installed light fixtures, and glass blocks, sourced from an abandoned factory, conceal the floor’s bathroom. The uncluttered retail space sees only a few furnishings, such as 101 Copenhagen‘s robust Brutus lounge chairs paired with an elegant side table from Friends & FoundersKnockout collection. A striking art object in the centre, made from a sawn-in-half cast-iron bathtub, was a joint creation by Ahmad and store owner Aleksandr Moiseyenkov. A small sink, given by the Milan-based designer, has been paired up and serves as a wall-mounted display. The expanded Carol Christian Poell carries a tightly curated range of coveted men’s apparel and shoes.
