Initially only selling online for quite a few years, founders Maria Diakova and Georgiy Vygranovskyi of bookstore Readellion – mind you, the name is a playful contraction of the words ‘read’ and ‘rebellion’ – have recently dipped their toe in the brick and mortar retail pool. For this try-out, the bookstore, which has become known for its curated selection of Ukrainian and English language publications on design and other creative disciplines, occupies a compact 44 sqm. (474 sq.ft.) space on the premises of a modern, five-storey residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district in downtown Kyiv. The interior design, created by local architecture practice prototype, sees a custom-designed suspended display table of galvanised steel which can be hoisted to make place for in-house events, such as workshops and presentations. The side walls feature an adjustable system of wall-mounted hanger strips with custom-designed shelves, also crafted from steel, for books and other merchandise. The storage stand follows a similar structural system, and is finished with cellular polycarbonate to subtly separate the main area from Readellion‘s back office. Additional furnishings, such as the sales counter and small displays, have been made from untreated timber.
