In less than two decades, Amsterdam has transformed from a high-end retail backwater to a veritable luxury shopping destination to be reckoned with in the Benelux region, surpassing the more established upscale retail arenas of Antwerp and Brussels with a higher number of luxury monobrand stores than in either city. The latest luxury fashion house to arrive in the Dutch capital is LOEWE whose boutique has just opened its doors on P.C. Hooftstraat, the city’s golden mile of high-end shopping. The LOEWE store occupies one half of a townhouse built in 1874 by Belgian architect Jean Servais, and features an interior design created by creative director Jonathan Anderson and his Madrid-based design team. Measuring 129 sqm. (1,389 sq.ft.) set across two floors, the interior design sees an infusion of colourful glazed tiles sourced from Valencia on the certain wall sections, paired with understated concrete flooring and pristine white lowered ceilings punctuated by rows of spotlights.
Furnishings and fixtures include sleek elegant clothing racks in black steel, custom-made cabinets and shelving, wool carpets infused with patches of colour, two Utrecht chairs by Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld, and a vintage George Nakashima chair. LOEWE‘s affiliation with the world of art and design is very much part of its brand identity, and its stores are artwork treasure troves. Needless to say, this retail space is no exception, and if you ask us, the objects add a distinct personal touch to the settings. Here, the curated selection is interestingly varied, and includes two tiny ceramic cups by artist Ron Nagle who was part of the influential 1950s California Clay Movement, a large painting by Amsterdam-based Taiwanese artist Cian-Yu Bai, and a metal oxide sculpture by Japanese artist and 2019 Loewe Craft Prize finalist Tomonari Hashimoto. The new LOEWE boutique carries women’s apparel, shoes, bags, and accessories, including jewellery, small leather goods and eyewear.
