Digital creative agency In Focus has been around for a while, successfully operating on the intersection of web, graphic design, video and photography. In anticipating of its tenth anniversary next year, and to honour its grassroots origins, the company has boldly stepped up its operations, opening a gallery and creative space on the ground floor of its office. Nestled in a maze of alleyways just west of popular Yoyogi Park in Tokyo‘s bustling Shibuya district, the structure, built in the late 1970s, has been fully gutted, revealing its raw concrete shell in full glory. Called Contrast, the venue’s chosen aesthetic is inspired by the concept of ‘reconstruction’, and sees a lounge, studio, and last but not least, a subterranean gallery space, all featuring an unapologetically pared back aesthetic. The venue’s creative space already hosted collage artist Ichi Tashiro whose preparation of an upcoming show at COMMON gallery in Tokyo could be viewed up close, in addition to a three-day video installation by media artist Norimichi Hirakawa that transformed colour, movement, and the shape of video data in a six-dimensional setting.
