Holt Renfrew Ogilvy reopened earlier this year after thorough revamp and expansion, becoming Montreal‘s number one luxury shopping destination and rivalling renowned peers across North America along the way. The newly gained stature has inspired Chanel to raise its profile on the premises with a full-fledged store of its own. Situated on the ground floor, the retail space measures 310 sqm. (3,337 sq.ft.) spread over two floors and has its own windows on street level. The plush interior design, created by New York City-based architect Peter Marino, sees a series of different settings, captured by custom fabrics in emblematic tweeds of the fashion house which adorn chairs and furnishings, along with silk and wool carpeting, all custom-designed for the retail space.

The entrance of the Chanel store is inside the department store, and upon entering, a high-ceiled atrium unfolds which offers shoppers an airy yet inviting reception, with twin grand staircases flanking an impressive display of the ready-to-wear collection. To the left, an accessory salon can be found in a setting of black and white, accented with gold, and presenting costume jewellery and a wide range of the brand’s trophy handbags. To the right, watches and fine jewellery are displayed directly below a specially-commissioned artwork by Hugo McCloud. The north side of the apparel salon transitions to a lobby and two fitting rooms, featuring artworks such as a canvas by Fernando Daza and a camellia collage by Peter Dayton. Along the twin staircases leading to the upper floor of the boutique, custom designed flat roman shades are situated, arranged in irregular vertical and horizontal seaming, and walls enriched with textured ‘moongold’ plaster finishes.

Up the stairs to the left, a second accessory salon can be found brimming with small leather goods, eyewear, and other accessories. The staircase to the right leads to the shoe salon, highlighted by gold leaf textured wall panels and embellished with a white stone coffee table. The setting upstairs mimics founder Coco Chanel‘s elegant apartment on rue Cambon in Paris, featuring a sofa upholstered in custom-woven fabrics in black, gold and coromandel tones and which stands gracefully beside a club chair dressed in a red, beige, black and gold ensemble. Three custom-designed tables complete the sophisticated setting, including two blackened bronze textured side tables, and a coffee table with an oil-quenched steel base and an oil gilded ‘moongold’ leaf glass top.
