Axel Arigato is on a roll! Hot on the heels of a major store launch in Stockholm, the Swedish sneaker brand has opened a second boutique abroad, and this time it’s in Copenhagen. The store occupies 270 sqm. (2,906 sq.ft.) across two floors of a historic building on Pilestræde, a bustling pedestrian shopping artery in the heart of the city, and follows a pop-up store which indulged avid shoppers here last year. The interior design is a renewed collab of Axel Arigato co-founder Max Svärdh and Swedish architect Christian Halleröd, and has resulted in an eclectic contrast between the traditional brick and stone façade, and the modern understated interior. The ground floor is dominated by a grand staircase in raw concrete which features different levels, and it’s wide enough to also visually allow a clear connection with the store’s upper floor.

The linear aesthetic of the setting, captured by displays, shelving and bold clothing racks is counterbalanced by a number of whimsical, cloud-shaped volumes crafted from Jesmonite, all dipped in a high-gloss lacquer, and some also with a pop of colour. The exposed ceiling has been painted pitch black and sees rows of LED panel lights, and large floor-to-ceiling mirrors optically enlarge the space. Commissioned sculptures by Danish artist Kiri-una Brito Meumann dot the premises, and add a heightened sense of adventure while shopping, tying in with the cloud-like volumes and similarly whimsical other furnishings. The top floor also features differently sized screens which are used to present creative content. The new Axel Arigato store stocks the brand’s full range of men’s and women’s footwear, apparel items, accessories, in addition to a curated selection of rare books, magazines and objects.
