clientele

russians from all over the country and citizens of the newly independent ex-soviet republics, western tourists [generally the more sympathetic ones]

service

the folks at the front desk are quite okay but the babushka concierges on each floor are genuine bitches from hell who either ignore you or shout back at you in russian

interior

the hotel boasts over 3,000 rooms, can you believe it? occupying a whole block next to red square this place is HUGE. long and endless corridors, rooms are clean and very basic but with incredible communist charm

closed in 2006! <=== a relic from the once buoyant and proud communist past, hotel rossiya [built in 1967] still is an intriguing place. its fading interior, interesting history and grumpy staff all provide added tourist value [uh-huh]. interested? well, get over here as soon as possible. sadly, it is to be torn down in the near future to make way for a characterless 5-star marriott hotel... ?
