Just like any other leading capital city, Moscow never ceases to surprise, and that also counts for its ever-evolving hospitality scene. A new café in Khamovniki, a leafy district on the south bank of the Moskva river, is making waves with its sleek and understated interior design by rising star Harry Nuriev of design practice Crosby Studios. Called 2046, the venue was founded by entrepreneurial couple Ivan and Natalia Proskurin who not only took the name from Hong Kong-based filmmaker Wong Kar-wai‘s eponymous masterpiece, but also made sure it referenced the futuristic element of the movie. The 2046 café is situated just off bustling Smolenskiy Bulvar, occupying a compact space on the ground floor of a residential building. Upon entering, guests are instantly warped ahead in time and find themselves in a pared back space revealing the building’s concrete shell. A full-fledged service station with a counter clad in shiny steel also serves as a divide between the front and back section of the café and is adorned by a circular digital artwork created by Roma Bantik. A striking feature, the artwork changes constantly, featuring either imagery or texts. The monochrome concrete and steel setting is offset by a splash of lime green throughout the premises, and captured by the service station’s back panels, ottomans, and additional seating. A corridor, clad with mirrors on one side and lined with recessed seating on the other, leads to 2046‘s cozy back section where additional seating and a restroom can be found. The café’s menu, supervised by a duo of top baristas, lists a variety of classic coffee concoctions, lemonade, matcha latte, small bites and pastries.
