A cool design-led interior isn’t exclusive to the upper echelon in hospitality, and that’s exactly what Ban Ban proves. The Korean diner, founded by co-owners Darren Song and Ernest Koon in downtown Adelaide, boasts well-designed premises that also have a laid-back and fun vibe at the same time. The eatery occupies a 150 sqm. (1,615 sq.ft.) ground floor unit alongside one of the area’s main arteries, featuring a striking interior design by local practice Genesin Studio that’s dominated by D-Tile modular tiling in a light blue shade. Clean and simple, the setting features built-in tables, paired with sturdy steel benches seating a total of 60 guests, in addition to matching counters and shelving units, giving it an unusually coherent look that seems to come straight out of a comic book. Contrasting with the abundance of shiny blue are wall-mounted neon artworks and crockery in a bright pink hue. Mind you, even the façade sees an infusion of light blue tiles. The restaurant’s name Ban Ban is Korean for ‘half-half’, and it’s what you ask for when ordering Korean-style fried chicken served two ways. Needless to say, it’s about simple but tasty street food in different variations, combined with Korean beers, various types of soju and other cold beverages.
