trust us, tokyo's sweltering summer heat can put the fiercest of shopping experts to the test. luckily, the city is blessed with an abundance of retreats where to cool off with a refreshing drink or recharge with a tasty bite. jun co. ltd. is one of japan's biggest retail conglomerates and runs adam et ropé, a leading nationwide chain of high-end men's and women's fashion stores. it was back in 1972 that they launched a related gastronomical hotspot, dubbed café de ropé, on bustling omotesando dori. the place had a retractable canvas roof that mimicked parisian cafés, and pretty much started the popular outdoor terrace trend in tokyo. mind you, it was the first place in all of japan to serve perrier mineral water! obviously, the place became a huge hit with the hipster community overnight. this winning formula was later introduced as café de ropé la mer to isshiki beach, a popular seaside refuge of the japanese imperial family and many tokyoites, located an approx. 75-minute train and bus ride away from central tokyo.

on sat - jul 7 café de ropé la mer once again emerges on the shores of sagami bay, a cool outdoor venue with urban bar and various multi-level spaces where to mingle, lounge and enjoy the sunny season. catering to a savvy crowd, the bar serves a wide selection of drinks, including signature cocktails and a selection of château jun wines from japan. as for bites, there'll be a string of tasty mexican dishes, served with freshly picked regional vegetables. and to entertain the crowd a string of events is scheduled, including a live gig by style guru hiroshi fujiwara on sun - jul 22. café de ropé la mer will remain open through aug 26. guess where we'll be hanging out in between our tokyo shopping sprees? exactly. location: isshiki beach, hayama machi [kanagawa prefecture].
