an affluent city state, singapore arguably has the region's most sophisticated and diverse range of lifestyle options in the leisure segment. while most of these have been directly imported from overseas, locally conceptualized spin-offs are becoming a trend. jansen tan is a former national cyclist of the island state who went on to study industrial design at temasek polytechnic. his enthusiasm for cycling remained through the years and has inspired him to launch coast cycles, a lifestyle bicycle brand with a concept store for bespoke-quality, locally designed bikes. tan initially wanted to make one new frame and an ideal bike but his idea evolved into creating an entire line of stylish city bikes which are functional, low maintenance, and last but not least, suitable for singapore's hot and humid tropical climate. the result is coast cycles' signature model, the coastliner.

this model features a patented stealth internal cable routing that keeps all cables within an aluminium enclosure with no visible welds. designed by local architecture practice fuur, the coast cycles store is housed in a low-rise structure, smack in the middle of a suburban residential area of town. featuring a contemporary palette of concrete and wood, the ground floor features a workshop and the coast and company where specialty coffee by papa palheta and a range of tasty bites are served. one floor up the retail space is situated where all bike models are showcased. shoppers can take the bike they fancy out for a test ride or use rolling trainer. interestingly, music also plays an important part at coast cycles. tan has collaborated with deejay dean chew to compile a selection of tracks that add up to the lifestyle bike experience. location: 54 siglap drive [siglap].
