it's not exactly a venue, but the sheer innovation makes it a destination in its own right. we're talking café x, the planet's first furobotic café created by café x technologies and wmf, a manufacturer of fully automated coffee machines. the first such café has just been launched on the premises of metreon mall in san francisco, and integrates hardware and software which blend the functionality of baristas and specialty coffee preparation methods. interestingly, café x sets itself apart by eliminating the on-site wait time, the potential for preparation error, and the unexpected variability, setting a new standard for automation technology and the specialty coffee service industry along the way.

can it get even niftier? yes, it can. you can order customized espresso-based beverages on the spot at the ordering kiosk or you can download a special app onto your mobile device to order in advance. once the beverage is ready, you can use the touch screens at café x to type in a four-digit order number which is either sent via text message or displayed on the app for ios and android. the mitsubishi robot arm will then identify your drink from the waiting stations and deliver it to you at the blink of an eye. and in case you wondered, café x currently works with specialty coffee roasters aka coffee, verve and peet's coffee. mind you, a second location has already opened halfway across the planet in hong kong. location: metreon, 135 4th street [soma].
