almost ten years ago french photographer sacha goldberger made a visit to his grandmother frederika and found her lonely and depressed. goldberger suggested they'd take funny - if not sheer outrageous - pictures of her being dressed in striking costumes and taking exagerated poses. born in budapest in the 1920s, frederika courageously saved the lives of several hungarian jews during world war II. she was later however forced by the communists to leave hungary and settled in france. now at 94, frederika is once again the heroine of a new photo series by goldberger, called mamika & co., that will also be published in a new book. in 2010 he first presented a mamika series - mamika is the affectionate diminutive of grandmother in hungarian - of frederika dressed up as a superhero, and this new collection of photos that's currently on display at galerie d'en face is very much a continuation. frederika's mamika character is joined by extras super papika, dark papouka [a funny version of darth vader], and last but not least yuck the dog [on through jan 25]. location: 7 rue louis-paul courier [st.-germain].
