new york: chanel soho renewal

last month chanel reopened its entirely revamped soho store with a star-studded bash that had the whole of soho buzzing in anticipation. for the renovation chanel's house architect peter marino took inspiration from the area's artistic, downtown vibe that not only resulted in a bigger shop but also in an interior that's very much chanel yet edgier and a tad more tech. the soho store's special features are a handbag bar with wannahave bags especially created by karl lagerfeld for the opening, and the first custom-created fragrance + beauty area stateside. to emphasize the artistic vibe, striking commissioned art works by a string of happening contemporary artists such as robert greene, peter belyi and alan rath are strewn across the premises. fashion meister karl lagerfeld flew in to attend the opening party, along with a giddy bunch of chanel-clad a-listers. the whole building had been wrapped in an led canvas that featured karl's artistic soho snapshots. following the opening party the lucky invitees were ushered to a one-night only chanel night club on mercer street where they could bootyshake to hipster dj sets and live gigs by the misshapes, bloc party's kele okereke and paris-based 'indiemoiselle' izia higelin. store location: 139 spring street [soho].
