furniture brand espasso specializes in modern and contemporary brazilian design, serving aficionados through a network of showrooms in los angeles, new york city and london, in addiition to a pop-up venue in miami. always aiming to expose its portfolio of talented designers to a bigger audience, espasso regularly stages special events. opening today at its showroom in the big apple is the first ever retrospective stateside of acclaimed são paulo-based designer carlos motta. although originally trained as an architect, he continued to explore industrial design and worked as a designer and cabinetmaker in the u.s., and later on relocated to finland to advance his knowledge on molded and rolled wood.

motta is one of brazil’s most acclaimed designers and has had a string of major shows at prestigious venues across his homeland. entitled atelier carlos motta - 40 years, the showcase at espasso presents no less than 50 of motta's most iconic furniture pieces, and will premiere eleven limited edition works that he especially created to be revealed here. and that's not all, folks. the brazilian designer personally got involved in the scenography, customizing the décor and hand-drawing illustrations that appear on walls alongside his designs [on through oct 12]. location: espasso, 38 north moore street [tribeca].
