Since its foundation in 2016, launching its first property in London, the Locke hotel chain has expanded quickly across the United Kingdom. Specifically targeting the flourishing creative tech communities with so-called aparthotels, properties have exceptional locations and feature design-led settings that go well with the core crowd. As of late, Locke manages yet another hotel in the British capital, its third already, and this time it’s smack alongside the Thames and across from Tate Modern. The newly opened Locke at Broken Wharf is situated at Broken Wharf House, a redeveloped seven-story 1970s structure with sweeping views of the river. The premises have seen a dramatic transformation which was supervised by New York City-based architecture practice and longtime collaborator Grzywinksi+Pons. Walls were knocked out, floor section removed, and even the entire façade has been updated to create modern settings which resonate well with standards of today’s savvy traveller.

Locke at Broken Wharf features 113 guest rooms and a series of public spaces, such as the ground floor social space which is designed as to behave like a connective interface between the city’s urban grid and the serenity of the Thames. As such, it’s a welcoming setting awash with homey seating arrangements, captured by a palette of materials such as terrazzo, limestone, timber, rattan, leather and tweed. The chosen aesthetic extends to the guest rooms, but here, it’s infused with slightly warmer materials and hues. The pads come in five categories an cater to both short and long-term stays, and in the latter category fall the Locke Studios and the Riverside Studios. Although each room category is well-designed, the Riverside Studios stand out, obviously because of the great views, but also due to the increased comfort by way of a Smeg kitchen and designer cooking gear. Deli Cat & Sons, the hotel’s coffee bar and  all-day deli, is inspired by a typical deli in New York City, and serves good food, coffee and cocktails.
