a rebranded offshoot of iconic tokyo-based design store cibone, today's special is a retail formula with an equally curated range of goods, albeit much more accessible and geared towards contemporary lifestyle, including items such as homeware, apparel and even garden supplies and food products. after operating two stores in the japanese capital, today's special has expanded outside the capital's city limits to kyoto, opening a shop-in-shop on the fourth floor of bal, a department store in the heart of the city. it occupies 284 sqm.[3,057 sq.ft.], and similarly to the previous stores, it features an interior design by schemata architects.

as is emblematic of chief architect jo nagasaka's design, the setting fully adapts to the building's concrete shell, and this is perfectly demonstrated by the exposed ceiling with a mosaic of meandering utility pipes. extrapolating the industrial vibe is an eclectic variety of furnishings, including steel shelving and vintage tables and chairs, but it's visually kept in check by a linear open-plan configuration. as said, the new today's special store stocks a variety of goods, all non-branded and geared towards a contemporary lifestyle. location: bal, 251 yamazaki-cho  kawaramachi-sanjo sagaru, 4th floor [central kyoto].
