hong kong: la habana in waiting

art basel hong kong's hotly anticipated second edition is coming up, infusing the city with a new and major dose of contemporary art from around the planet. as a large number of high profile individuals are expected to jet, a number of luxury retailers anticipate by staging special events. paris-based cobbler christian louboutin does so with an exhibition by new york-based photographer quentin shih. held may 15-19 at both the christian louboutin boutique [1] in central and the neighbouring anita chan lai-ling gallery [2], the show is entitled la habana in waiting, and presents a number of shih's recent works that explore the unspoken tension and melancholy rising within cuban citizens. it’s very much a visual exploration of individuals who struggle for identity within one of the planet's last communist regimes. as shih himself is from china, he's able to draws parallels through his work between both their experiences and his previous life in a creatively restrictive environment. location [1]: 10-12 wyndham street [central]. location [2]: fringe club, 2 lower albert road [central].
