hamburg: paul smith store opening

paul smith has arrived in germany, opening its first store smack in the middle of hamburg's historic downtown area. the shop is located in an elegant 19th-century townhouse in biedermeier style and features a series of uniquely designed rooms that each pay homage to the building's original design. an additional reference to its style origins comes through in the palette, with walls painted in pastel shades of green and lilac while upholstery and furniture playfully add pops of colour throughout the premises. in the first room shoppers find bags and accessories presented on walnut shelves. a wall lined with thousands of meticulously hand-applied ivory coloured buttons celebrates designer paul smith's personal focus on attention to detail and effort.

it also ties in with the design of the paul smith boutiques at 9 albemarle street in london and on rue du faubourg st.-honoré in paris where, respectively, the women’s shoe space is covered in dominoes and penny coins adorn the men’s suit area. the room filled with the brand's shoe collection connects with the store's spacious back section with traditional conservatory and view of the garden. the conservatory features a fotheringhay pattern tiled floor and rattan peacock chairs. a sweeping staircase leads upstairs, past a picture wall full of original artwork and designer paul smith’s own photography, to the women’s section upstairs. another staircase gives access to choose to the men’s tailoring space. while many of the building's original features have been restored, a selection of cherry-picked furnishings have been added to give the store a unique vibe. location: hohe bleichen 15 [hamburg mitte].
