founded as an online store in 2011 by sorasak chanmantana, a young thai entrepreneur who initially pursued a career in indie music, onion's operations quickly caught on and the merchandise on offer expanded with a slew of coveted contemporary brands and items. when the time felt right he launched a brick and mortar store. initially located near bustling siam square, the shop was later relocated to thonglor, partnering with brave roasters which operate a café with outdoor terrace on the premises. given the well-edited range of goods, it's going rather well, but chanmantana's business acumen and keen urban insight has already resulted in a second outlet. located in aree, an area of town which has been hailed as the new lifestyle hub for young movers and shakers, the new branch is the very first multibrand store there and also features a café where shoppers can relax in between trophy hunts.

the interior design is an extrapolation from the first store, featuring a whitewashed space dotted with industrial-style furnishings, designed by the retailer and made by local craftsmen, and carefully selected props. pretty much everything has been put on wheels, and the shop configuration changes monthly to create a different and appealing mood. the new onion store caters to a similar young crowd of creatives, both male and female, who shun ostentatious luxury brands and seek the discretion and fun factor of niche contemporary brands instead. accordingly, the shop stocks a cool mix of contemporary brands, including saturdays surf nyc, shoes like pottery, moscot, ssap nyc and last but not least, onion's very own label. location: 66 thanon rama IV soi 30, second floor [aree].
