the dynamics of retail in the far east aren't only determined by the voraciousness of local consumers, it's also the cultural sensibilities that put an interesting spin on matters. as food plays a pivotal role in society, anchoring much of the social interaction, it's very easily – and quite logically, we gather – embedded in retail formats such as knock kitchen & kicks in bangkok. situated in thonglor, a happening neighbourhood with its fair share of hipster establishments, it's a restaurant and sneaker store innovatively rolled into one. khanngoen nuanual and prinya intachai, members of thai-american rap collective thaitanium, teamed up with good friend and hailed chef chalee kader to come up with a concept that would literally unite two of their biggest interests: cool, hard-to-find sneakers and good food.

the entrepreneurs enlisted local design practice onion to redevelop a narrow and elongated, four-storey shop house into a dynamic environment that would reflect a contemporary sense of street without the usual connotations. a flight of stairs, a focal point in the new design, takes visitors up to the first floor where they encounter a restaurant that serves classic and traditional wester fare. stretching all the way to the back of the building it consists of indoor and outdoor dining sections and a bar with dj booth, each featuring a distinctly different atmosphere. concrete blocks and zinc have been extensively used, and these materials are paired witha white and green colour scheme that also accentuates the function of each section.

a warm white hue has been picked for the restaurant + bar, whereas a cooler white shade adorns the staircase and the retail space. the shop extrapolates the linear aesthetic instigated downstairs into a setting that's both polished and raw. a multi-tiered display stretches along the entire length of one wall, opposite a backdrop of mirrors and sales desk. the building's original concrete floor has been retained, adding the required dash of street patina. as said, knock's retail space primarily stocks sneaker, supplemented by streetwear items by leading brands, such as nike, adidas, saucony, mostly heard rarely seen and dssent. location: 333/1 sukhumvit soi 55 [thonglor].
