what's this fixation with shipping containers these days? it seems to be the hottest retail statement of late. after being deployed to construct a pop-up mall in both london and amsterdam, and a stunning signature store in california, it's in the port of antwerp where it has been put to use to assemble a pop-up hotel. called sleeping around, several have been used for this project. the pop-up hotel features just four comfy hotel rooms which are equipped with modern amenities you'd expect as a modern traveler. these include a box-spring bed, a rain shower stocked with rituals cosmetics, an ipod docking station and air conditioning. obviously, all come with sweeping views of the harbour. two separate containers have been converted to accommodate a breakfast room + lounge and a sauna facility for soothing relaxation. the entire sleeping around concept has been developed within an ecological mindset and only sustainable materials have been used. the containers were manufactured in china and used for transporting goods. as it's not always profitable to return the containers empty, they are often left behind in ports across the planet, including antwerp’s. location: scheldekaai [antwerpen noord].
