As far as we know, it’s the brand’s very first store overseas. We’re talking Malbon‘s newly opened outpost, smack in the middle of Bonifacio Global City, a leafy commercial district of Manila. Here, the cult golfwear brand has secured a spacious unit on the premises of Shangri-La The Fort, a plush high-rise hotel, and once again featuring an interior design created by Los Angeles-based architecture and design practice 22RE. The store occupies approx. 325 sqm. (3,500 sq.ft.), in addition to an approx. 56 sqm. (600 sq.ft.) V.I.P. lounge upstairs, featuring an aesthetic that’s not only inspired by local architecture and the surrounding landscape, but also incorporates local materials. The lofty ground floor, entirely dipped in a pristine off-white hue, sees a curved fibreglass volume on one side of the store, which more or less follows the shape of the glass store façade, while seamlessly evolving in a screen which conceals the mezzanine floor. A tiered shelving unit presenting the footwear collection sits right below, flanked by designer and artist Dean Levin‘s chrome-polished rock sculpture and curved low bench on one side.
On the other side, it borders a hidden putting room, a cylindrical display, and seating comprising circular travertine benches. Additional furnishings include display tables, metal and brass clothing racks, a large mirror and ornamental plastered rocks. Gently breaking the monochrome setting is a curved mahogany panelling with a large horizontal cut-out which envelopes the stairwell. Here, a built-in service kiosk integrates into the store, while curved mahogany-panelled doors conceal the fitting rooms. The staircase panelling features an integrated handrail. The V.I.P. lounge, which offers a more private shopping experience to more discerning shoppers, is fully clad in mahogany panels which conceal service counters and storage. A seating area with two sofas and a low table allow shoppers to sit back comfortably while pondering trophy purchases. Filtered light from the large circular skylights and the opaque side screens add to the intimate setting.
