Leading Sydney-based streetwear store Above The Clouds has expanded to Melbourne, opening a new outpost right smack on Collins Street. Occupying a 320 sqm. (3,445 sq.ft.) two-level unit at 80 Collins, an upscale shopping centre, the interior design has been created by Pattern Studio. As Above The Clouds inherited an only recently refurbished site, the design team carefully balanced a creativity with restraint, with the aim to achieve an altogether new aesthetic and experience for the store, minimising unnecessary and wasteful discarding elements of the existing space. The transformation of the retail space has not only resulted in a brand new façade, but also dismantled perimeter barriers, allowing an interaction between the retail space and the vibrant urban surrounds – after all, Above The Clouds is all about forward streetwear and fashion – while new bespoke bespoke interventions, such as shelves, tables and garment rails add a playfulness to the settings, most notably a Colosseum-inspired tiered shoe display on the upper floor.
The frivolity element is further accentuated by a material palette that creates a tactile dialogue between rough and refined. Additional notable furnishings include a sales counter comprising stacked cubes, displays dipped in lemon, cucumber, and mandarin hues, which contrast with the muted backdrop, and striking light fixtures, including a Parentesi suspension lamp by Flos and Marset’s Fragile table lamp. Adding am additional visual dynamic to the retail space is a controllable RGB light system which offers flexibility in activations and display, allowing use colour-drenching to illuminate the upper floor in the evenings. Exposed ceilings, revealing a myriad of utility pipes, adding another visual layering to the settings. The Above The Clouds store carries a tightly curated range of apparel, shoes, accessories, bags, eyewear and jewellery by a string of leading brands, including Marni, Our Legacy, Kenzo, Eckhaus Latta, Martine Rose, and A Kind of Guise. © superfuture
